New Zealand is shifting their reading curriculum to "structured literacy." This is their form of direct instruction that focuses on explicit phonics instruction like phonological awareness and morphology (individual letter sounds and sounds of small letter combinations). They are starting to ditch balanced literacy curriculum, like Reading Recovery, for more explicit phonics instruction.
"In 2017, Brown stepped in to assist 105 students who had received balanced literacy instruction and were falling behind their peers in reading.
Today, after following a structured literacy approach, Brown says only 19 students require that extra intervention."
One school in New Zealand replaced Reading Recovery with their structured reading program using explicit direct instruction and have found the results prove that scientifically based reading instruction program works.
